When I make a new project in Android Studio, I don't see any code files in the "Project" pane; instead, I see "External Libraries" and "Scratches and Consoles". Android Studio used to show code. I've tried following steps in tutorials, but they all seem to automatically see the code, and don't explain how to show it. Here's a screenshot of what I see:
As you can see the 'Project' written over there , in the right side their is a drop down. Click over there and you can see many options, but click on the last option named "Android". Their you can find that its showing 'app' and 'Gradle Scripts'. Click on the app drop down and go to java and res file
You can see your code.

I'm a noob in Android studio and Java, I do have a solid c# background, but I can't seem to fix this problem:
Some of my partners asked to add a button to a previous android build created by someone else, so I downloaded Android studio and imported the project, but I can't seem to find anything in there. We can't contact the creater of the project to ask in what he developed the app.
As you can see, there's no layout in the project.
And this is what the project folder looks like:
Where Can I edit layouts? Am I in the wrong IDE?
Thanks
If you want to change the Layout, you can do Two things:
OPTION 1
1. Simply click into your Xml file and select the "Text" option at the bottom on your screen
2.Change to layout
OPTION 2
1.Just drag another layout in Design and put your items in it, delete your old layout PS. you can have layouts in other layouts
Now, Thats just for the Layouts, to see classes just do...
after double clicking that, itl bring up a new tab.
PS This is somewhat a Duplicate, try to search up your question first instead of making a new question

I am unable to see the folders that are physically existing, this is the case.
But in actual fact I have other folders as welll
So what can I do?
Above your the file directory view in Android Studio is a drop down which currently is most likely set to Android. Change it to Project and you should be able to see all your files.
I tried the all the approaches mentioned above but can't fix rather than fix it by a hardcore approach -
Step 1. Close your Android studio.
Step 2. Delete .gradle and .idea folder from your project directory.
Step 3. Open your project and you will see the files again.
go to View menu then click tool window then after click on project
view->toolwindow->project
it worked for me
for me doing the following works:
from menu go to: View--->tool windows ---> Project
then click the little gears icon (settings) you will see an option to change the empty middle packages. it looks like this:
disable "Hide Empty Middle Packages" under the Project View settings dropdown and then it should make everything show up.
If anyone ever does what I did maybe this will help:
Android Studio does not like it when module names begin with a number. I was learning from some tutorials and named the first module "1-name" and the next one "2-name". Setup was fine and it ran, but only the "Gradle" Scripts entry would show in the navigation window in "Android" mode.
I am trying to add a new item (class) to my project but I when try to do this, I initially get this warning:
Then I keep getting this error saying that the class already exists (although it doesnt) whenever I try to add a new class
What should I do to fix this ?
Although the class isn't shown in Visual Studio as part of the project, the file still exists in the folder. In solution explorer, click the icon at the top to "Show All Files", then the file should appear in solution explorer, you can right click and select include in project.
I know this is an old thread just adding some info.
If this issue appears try to download the latest update for Visual Studio 2012, should be update 4.
I want to see warnings of my code in Android Studio, But i am unable to find the option to display warnings view. In case of eclipse we can see the warnings in the "Problems" view.
Can anyone suggest me, how to view warnings in android studio?
If, on the toolbar, you click Analyze -> Inspect Code; then in the window that pops up select how much of your project you want to inspect (I usually do Whole Project, but you might want to select a specific module), then click okay.
Android Studio will work for a bit, then the inspection window will pop up from the bottom with a list of results, subdivided by inspection.
Build -> Make Project (Ctrl + F9) gives what we can get equivalent of Eclipse's “Problems” view on Android Studio
you can use F2 to next problems, see more here: Navigating to Next/Previous Error
GO to View-->Tool Windows-->Messages to view the warnings
Even i searched all the settings in Android Studio, but couldn't find a separate window for it.
The warnings are actually visible to the right end of a particular line as a small yellow marker and clicking on that show the warnings in the status bar below. The colors of them can be editted in the inspection options.
Hope this helps you.
The closest thing Android Studio/IntelliJ has to the Problems view in Eclipse is to use the Problems section of the Project tool window. With that open, navigate down to any classes that appear there and open them in the editor. Once in the editor, you can use F2 to jump between errors in the open file.
Unfortunately, IntelliJ's Problems tool window shows classes with errors nested by folder/package, so you have to expand several levels and it takes up a lot of screen real estate to see even one error. It also doesn't list the errors individually, forcing you to first open the problematic file and then use F2 to navigate to each one. I also had the problem that errors in files that weren't open, didn't show up there.

I recently installed Visual Studio 2012, and I've been banging my head against my desk looking for missing options.
I use the Recent Projects and Solutions menu option (under the File menu) a lot in Visual Studio 2010, but don't have anything like that in Visual Studio 2012. However, my boss does, so I know there's something wrong with my install or an option I've missed.
I've casually looked through registry settings for anything like "Project" that exists in my 2010 settings but does not exist in my 2012 settings, and came up empty handed. Does anyone know how to fix this?
It looks like some part of the upgrade process just removed this menu option for me. Following nithins link to this question, I followed the instructions the author created to re-create the Recent Projects and Solutions menu item.
For posterity, those steps were (performed in Visual Studio 2012):
Under the Tools menu, click Customize...
Click the Commands tab.
Change the Menu bar selected option in the drop-down list to File.
Click Add New Menu.
Click Modify Selection, rename to Recent Projects and Solutions.
Under the Menu bar drop-down list, select File | Recent Projects and Solutions.
Click Add Command...
(The Add Command menu should appear here.)
Under Categories on the left-hand side, click File.
When the Commands list (on the right-hand side) refreshes, click Recent Project list, and click OK.
Click Close.
Happy project switching!
I had the exact same problem, but I had the sense that other menu items were missing as well.
What I did was go into Tools => Import & Export Settings, choose Reset all settings, and then select the same profile as when I installed Visual Studio. (General Development Settings.) That fixed the issue.
