I want to sum a row like
A B C D E
2 4 3 5 5
I want the formula to sum from A1 to some column number like It can be up to column 4 (D1) or up to column 5 (E1). I can retrieve column number but how to add up to that column number is what I am asking for.
Start of sum is fixed A1 but end is dynamic (not fixed)
Any solution will be highly appreciated
Say we want to sum up part of the first row.
Place the first column number in A2 and the last column number in A3. Then:
=SUM(INDEX(1:1,A2):INDEX(1:1,A3))
In your posted example, you would put 1 in A2.
It's probably easiest to sum up the entire row =SUM(2:2) (to sum the values in row 2) or if you have some other data at the beginning (or you want the sum to show up at the beginning) you can do something like =SUM(B2:XFD2)
I got that last column name here: https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-last-column-name-in-an-Excel-file
and checked it was the same as newer versions here: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/excel-specifications-and-limits-1672b34d-7043-467e-8e27-269d656771c3#ID0EBABAAA=Newer_versions

I have simple problem, but I've not be able to get an answer from searching. I require a column to calculate the number of the nth occurrence of a value. It's best explained in this picture
I require a method to calculate column B.
I'd be very grateful for any help.
Are you looking to merely provide a count of the distinct entries of column A in column B? Or merely add a formula to come up with the table in your link?
If the latter, then the formula to write in cell B2 is:
=COUNTIF(A$2:A2,A2)
then copy/paste it down column B. Note - if your data is both a Date and Time, but the cell is formatted to only display a date, you may not get the results you want. You'd need to interject a new column with a "floor" calculation to round the date/time value to a date (Excel date times are decimal, with integer part dictating the date, and remaining 0.0 -> 1.0 dictating the time of day)
If you just want to derive a table of the counts of distinct entries in column A, then a pivot table will do this for you - simple add a pivot table to cover the data in column A, then select column A into the rows category, and then also drag it into the values category, ensuring the field is set to "Count of". You should then have a table with the distinct entries in your data set in one column, and the count of their occurrences in the other column.
You can use the COUNTIF worksheet function, with a relative address.
Eg. In cell B2, enter this formula:
=COUNTIF(A$2:A2,A2)
And then fill-down.
Use the following formula to generate the required series:
=COUNTIF($A$1:A1,A1) and strech(copy) it in all the cells
This will generate result like this:
A 1 COUNTIF($A$1:A1,A1)
A 2 COUNTIF($A$1:A2,A2)
C 1 COUNTIF($A$1:A3,A3)
C 2 COUNTIF($A$1:A4,A4)
B 1 COUNTIF($A$1:A5,A5)
B 2 COUNTIF($A$1:A6,A6)
A 3 COUNTIF($A$1:A7,A7)
C 3 COUNTIF($A$1:A8,A8)
D 1 COUNTIF($A$1:A9,A9)
D 2 COUNTIF($A$1:A10,A10)
D 3 COUNTIF($A$1:A11,A11)
D 4 COUNTIF($A$1:A12,A12)
I need a formula that looks for a value in column A, finds the smallest value of that row and displays the corresponding value of a row on the top of the sheet (row 3 in my case) where the smallest value has been found.
also would like to find the second and third smallest value and display the value of row 3.
For example: I need to lookup X in the first column, find the smallest value in that row (1) and display the value on the row on top of that column (D)
and second smallest value for X to display C, third smallest for X to display E.
enter code here
A B C D E F
Z 6 8 9 5 2
X 7 2 1 3 7
Y 9 2 6 1 6
This codes should work:
=INDEX($B$2:$F$2,MATCH(MIN(IF($B$1=$A$3:$A$5,$B$3:$F$5)),INDEX($B$3:$F$5,MATCH($B$1,$A$3:$A$5,0),),0))

Suppose your data are in range A1:F4 as shown below:
You can use the following formula to find the 1st, 2nd and 3rd smallest value in the row starting "X". Put it in Cell I2 and drag it down.
=SMALL(INDEX($B$2:$F$4,MATCH("X",$A$2:$A$4,0),),H2)
Then you can use the following formula to find the corresponding value in the row starting "Z":
=INDEX(INDEX($B$2:$F$4,MATCH("X",$A$2:$A$4,0)-1,),,MATCH(I2,INDEX($B$2:$F$4,MATCH("X",$A$2:$A$4,0),),0))
It is basic INDEX+MATCH approach. If you have problem understanding the solution, I suggest you to google some online tutorials on the use of INDEX+MATCH. SMALL function is used to find the nth smallest value as requested.
Cheers :)
Column A Has Text & Columns B, C & D contain numbers.
For Ex.)
A... …B C D
John 4 6 2
Dave 4 6 4
Mike 4 5 1
Bill 2 5 9
I would like a cell to return the name in column A that has the Largest Number in Column B. And if there are similar numbers, go to the next column and determine which is highest, and if that is tied go to the next column and so on.
Any help would be appreciated.
We can de-conflict ties.In E1 enter:
=B1 + C1/(10*MAX(C:C))+D1/(100*MAX(D:D))
and copy down. Then in another cell enter:
=INDEX(A:A,MATCH(MAX(E:E),E:E,0))
EDIT#1
This is only good for 3 columns of numbers, but it is very easy to add additional de-confliction terms if necessary:
=B1 + C1/(10*MAX(C:C))+D1/(100*MAX(D:D))+E1/(1000*MAX(E:E))
For an expandable number of rows/columns, use a helper row with the same number of columns as number columns in your data. The formulas below reference the following image (the data are in A1:G7):
B9-->=MAX(B1:B7)
C9 (fill over the remaining columns to G9)-->
=MAX(IF(MMULT(--($B1:B7=$B9:B9),--(ROW(INDIRECT("1:"&COLUMNS($B9:B9)))>0))=COLUMNS($B9:B9),C1:C7))
The following formula will give the answer (shown in A9 above):
=INDEX(A1:A7,MATCH(TRUE,(MMULT(--($B1:G7=$B9:G9),--(ROW(INDIRECT("1:"&COLUMNS($B9:G9)))>0))=COLUMNS($B9:G9)),0))
UPDATE WITH ALTERNATIVE METHOD
Using a helper column instead, again referencing the image below (the data are in A1:G7):
I1 (fill down to I7)-->
=SUM(--(MMULT(SIGN(B1:G1-$B$1:$G$7)*2^(COLUMN(G1)-COLUMN(A1:F1)),--(ROW(INDIRECT("1:"&COLUMNS(B1:G1)))>0))>0))
The following formula will give the answer (shown in J1 above):
=INDEX(A1:A7,MATCH(MAX(I1:I7),I1:I7,))
As a bonus, notice that the helper column corresponds to the order that you would get from sorting the data by each column left-to-right. In other words, you could use the helper column to perform a formula-based multi-column sort on strictly numeric data. For the last image, entering the following array formula into a range with the same dimensions as A1:G7 gives a descending sort on columns B through G:
=IF(A1:A7=A1:A7,INDEX(A1:G7,MATCH(ROW(A7)-ROW(A1:A7),I1:I7,0),))
I have
Year 1 2 3 4 5 6
I'm trying to make it so that each year number 1-6 is equal to another number value i.e. Year 1 is equal to 5. Year 2 is equal to 6.
You will not be able to store one value in a cell and use a different value for calculation. However you may do this calculation with the help of a lookup from another table,
Assuming you have the years in Column A and the corresponding mappings are in Column E and F, you can use the below formula in Column B,
=INDEX(E:F,MATCH(A1,E:E,0),2) * 2
This formula lookups the value in A1 in the table E:F and returns the corresponding Column F element. That is finally multiplied with the 2 to show your result. Instead of just using just A1 for multiplying by 2, you should be using INDEX(E:F,MATCH(A1,E:E,0),2). Hope this helps.
I've googled for a solution to my problem for days and I just can't seem to get my head around how to do this.
I have 28 chickens and I track the eggs each one lays each month. My Excel sheet looks like this:
Current Egg-cel sheet
Column C is populated by the formula:
=LARGE($A$2:$A$29,$B1)
I'm using column B to increment the LARGE function
I want column D to populate with which chicken number laid the quantity in column C.
Obviously INDEX MATCH or VLOOKUP returns the first match for all equal values. How do I find the the next match? i.e.
Egg-cell sheet 2
I've seen similar questions and solutions but I for the life of me can not get it to work.
Use this formula in D2:
=INDEX(B:B,AGGREGATE(15,6,ROW($A$2:$A$29)/($A$2:$A$29=C2),COUNTIF($C$2:C2,C2)))
And drag down
If you're happy to add a few helper columns, this is a simple way to go:
The formula in column C creates a unique number by bringing together the eggs laid and the chicken number
=--(A2&"."&B2)
Column D is just your LARGE formula,
=LARGE($C$2:$C$4,B2)
Column E just gets the integer part of column D
=INT(D2)
And finally Column F gets the decimal part (chicken number) from column D
=--REPLACE(MOD(D2,1),1,2,"")
