Single sign on using nodejs and jwt - node.js

Can we create a single sign on with multiple NodeJs applications? Main application is using JWT authentication. I want to use same user authentication to work in other applications without having complete user profile information.

Yes you can. Include whatever information is useful for you when signing your jwt token. Send this token to the other applications, verify it and you can authenticate the user.

External authentication providers and authenticating requests to RESTful API

I'm working on adding google login to my web app. It's a RESTful app, so once a user is logged in, each individual request must be authenticated with a token.
Currently, I create my own tokens using JWT. I can add useful information to the token object to help with state management.
My question is: once I add google as an authentication provider, do I then need send every request to Google to be authenticated, rather than authenticating it on my own server? Do I then lose the ability to customize the content of the token?
With external authentication providers, is it normal to manage separate JWTs for calls to your RESTful API?
Normally, you'll have the login action use the third party to identify the user. Your internal code will probably create/store/fetch an app local user profile of some sort, and you'll create your JWT based on that. Further calls to your API bearing a valid token are then trusted to have already been authenticated and therefore need no further calls to the auth provider.

Right authentication for B2B application - JWT, OAuth etc

I read articles on choosing the right authentication mechanism and I understand that JWT just defines a token while OAuth is a full framework that can use JWT. There are also other frameworks (Firebase?) and token-standards.
Now for my specific use-case I have a single-page-, microservice app with Angular2 that will run the whole day in the browser without any refreshing, in a rather old B2B environment (2GB ram, IE11). So social logins are not needed and a lightweight solution is preferable. Can you suggest anything?
This questionary could help
Are you using a forms based web or a SPA?
Forms: Use server sessions
SPA: Use authentication tokens (JWT or opaque)
Using authentication tokens, do you want to avoid storing session data at server side?
Yes: Use JWT
It does not matter: Use opaque tokens
The client needs to verify token or extract token claims?
Yes: Use JWT signed with RSA
No: Use JWT with HMAC or opaque tokens
Do you have an API for third party?
Yes: Use OAuth2 or OpenIDConnect issuing authentication tokens after succesful user login
No: Nothing extra
Do you want to manage user passwords?
Yes: Make your own registration and login forms
No: Integrate social logins (they use oauth/OIDC)

Trade username and password for a token

I have a Node.js application that offers several different routes in front of MongoDB. I need to make sure that only authenticated requests can access these routes.
Ideally, I want to set it up so that a username and password comes in to the API, and in a response we give them back a token. I don't mind managing the tokens inside MongoDB myself, but I need to make sure that the token we give back can make authenticated requests. I don't want to force the user to send their credentials each time, just the token.
I've read for a few days about passport, and there's currently 307 strategies. Which strategy am I describing here?
Which strategy am I describing here?
You are describing a Local Strategy.
As per their description:
This module lets you authenticate using a username and password in your Node.js applications.
I don't want to force the user to send their credentials each time, just the token.
Passport auth strategies just provide various ways to authenticate (or in simple terms login) the user, not how to persist that login. Login persistence is usually done with user sessions.
One way you can solve this is to combine the local strategy with the express session middleware. Combination of the two allows for a fairly simple auth system that requires the user to login once and then persists the session.
In a typical web application, the credentials used to authenticate a user will only be transmitted during the login request. If authentication succeeds, a session will be established and maintained via a cookie set in the user's browser.
Each subsequent request will not contain credentials, but rather the unique cookie that identifies the session. In order to support login sessions, Passport will serialize and deserialize user instances to and from the session.
PassportJS docs give an example how to achieve this.
For this you should prefer generating JWT tokens for a the login and then using the token to always authenticate user actions.
Following steps are need to implement this style of token login system
generate token on login
verify when token supplied and use the decoded data to identify user
use should proper middleware in order to protect your api.

nodejs authentication using api

I am building an application which needs to authenticate from another application (via api)which provides response status(success, failure) and an access-token.I need simple authentication where when user supplies correct credentials, I hit the api and save the authentication user name and access-token in session and have a persistent session.I have tried looking passport http and other strategies. But I don't think they serve this use case?Kindly let me know if I am wrong and what is the easy and effective way to achieve this.
You don't need store access-token in session.
The easiest way is use JWT (JSON Web Token) - http://jwt.io. When user sends username\password credentials to your API, you check if these credentials is correct. After that you are signing JWT and respond to the client.
When client sends to you signed access-token, you can check it with passport-jwt module - https://www.npmjs.com/package/passport-jwt.

Generate token after login nodejs API

I am creating an API using nodejs and express. I need to provide local username/password authentication. I may need to provide additional authentication in the future so I am using passportjs as it seems the most flexible/plug-able.
The API will be used by a web application as well as a mobile application. Instead of having to pass the username/password with every single api request I was thinking I could let the user login and provide the client with a token. The client can store the token and provide that on each api request.
I have looked at using JWT tokens ie, http://coderead.wordpress.com/2012/08/16/securing-node-js-restful-services-with-jwt-tokens/. However I am not really sure how to create a secure token with JWT. I have read that using the username in a token is a bad idea. Has anyone use JWT in node to create tokens. Got an example?
Any other modules for node that I can take a look at for token generation.
node-uuid is the module you are looking for. I use it to authenticate the users and any task that requires a random and unique identifier. Encoding the credentials in the token is generally a bad idea.
It was already built into nodes crypto pacakge.
