Checking if pair of values exists in pair of columns? - excel

I am attempting to find in Excel whether a unique pair of values exists across two columns in a separate spreadsheet. For example:
Array 1
1 - A
2 - B
3 - A
4 - C
Array 2
1 D
2 E
2 B
3 C
I would like the column next to 2, B to return "TRUE", and all other columns to return "FALSE", as 2B exists in Array 2 but none of the other pairds do.
I've tried surfing Stack Overflow for this problem as I felt it would be a very common lookup but surprisingly have had no luck so far. VLookups have given some results but they stop at the first pair. For example let's say we had Array 3:
Array 2
1 D
2 E
2 B
4 C
Now both 2B and 4C in Array 1 should return trues.

Formula in C1:
=COUNTIFS(D:D,A1,E:E,B1)>0

Array one in Column A
Array two in Column B
Paste this XLookup in Column C1, then drag formula down to C4. The corresponding values that match will be listed next to the values from Column A if they exist in Column B.
=XLOOKUP(A1,B$1:B$4,B$1:B$4,"",0,1)

Look up for highest value from another column if values are equal excel

***1 2 3***
a 2 3
b 3 4
c 4 3
d 5 2
so I know to get the highest value I do
=INDEX(column1, MATCH(MAX(column3), column3, 0))
... which would give me 'b'
now I want to get the second highest value based on the column 3 but because there are two cells with 3 (which is the second highest value) I want to use the one that has the lowest value in column 2 based on those two rows. Is this possible?
Use a 'helper' column that adds column C + (column B ÷ 10) and use a modification of your original formula on that column.

The standard formula in F5 is,
=INDEX(A$2:A$5, MATCH(AGGREGATE(14, 6, D$2:D$5, ROW(1:1)), D$2:D$5, 0))
Fill down as necessary.

Keep on summing corresponding cell and compare with first column for summing up first column based on comparision in excel

Consider the following data setup:
_A_ _B_ _C_
1 1
2 1 1
3 3
Such that a formula would return the following results for columns B and C respectively:
_A_ _B_ _C_
4 2
Now I want to sum column A if A-(B+C) is equal to 0.
so for above example sum would be 1+3 = 4 on column B, since row 1 and 3 satisfy 1-1=0 first row, 3-3=0 third row. so A value on 1st and 2nd row is 1+3=4. Row 2nd doesn't satisfy 2-1=1 not 0 so ignore.
on column C, B+C in second row 2-(1+1) = 0 ,So it would be sum 2 in that column C, ignoring first and third row since it already has been counted on column B.
columns continue like D E....
So sum up from B to current column..so if i am in column B it will sum up till B.If in C B+C....If in D B+C+D etc and then compare with column A
Insufficient rep to comment, this is at least a partial answer and perhaps full.
I think you're looking for this to happen in some lower row in B:
=SUMPRODUCT(--(A1:A3=B1:B3),A1:A3)
And this in C:
=SUMPRODUCT(--(A1:A3-(B1:B3+C1:C3)=0),A1:A3)
Although as EEM points out all the sample rows satisfy this condition so you get "6" instead of "2"

Excel vlookup with two columns in source and target returning another column

I have a spreadsheet that has 4 columns sheet 1, and 5 columns sheet2 and I need to do a vlookup on Sheet1!a2&c2 and match the row in sheet2!a2&c2 and return sheet2!c5.
I think Index and Match would do it but all the examples have been matching a single value to an array which isn't what I need for eg.
Can't do attachments yet :( text it is sorry for the format
Sheet1
R1 A B C D
R2 2 D 3 Result will match sheet1!a2&c2 to sheet 2!A3&C3 and return Sheet2!e3 ie 34
Sheet2
R1 A B C D E
R2 2 F 5 GR 72
R3 2 X 3 FR 34
Any links or help?
Update
Sorry I wasn't clear I want to match the cobination of A2 and C2 in sheet 1,
ie in the example =sheet1!A2&sheet1!c2=23
to the values in sheet2!a2 plus sheet2!c2,
ie in this example =Sheet2!a3&Sheet2!c3=23,
and then return the value in Sheet2!E? , ie Sheet2!E3=34 here
I've done this before by creating a cheat column in sheet 2 = a2&c2 in say d2 and filling down then using, assuming 3 rows, however I can't create the cheat column in sheet2
=vlookup(a2&c2,sheet2!d2:e3, 2, false)
The rows sheet2! look like, sorry about the formatting
Picture attached, which I suddenly got to do , where I need to match the yellow columns in the lookup then return the brown column to sheet1!E2 but I can't add the cheat column Sheet2!d2:3 to the sheet cause the user is difficult :)
Thanks again. Any good tutorial on Index?
Try using LOOKUP like this
=LOOKUP(2,1/(A2=Sheet2!A$2:A$10)/(C2=Sheet2!C$2:C$10),Sheet2!E$2:E$10)
The two "tests", i.e.
(A2=Sheet2!A$2:A$10)
and
(C2=Sheet2!C$2:C$10)
return "arrays" of TRUE/FALSE values but when you divide 1 by one of those and then the other TRUE is converted to 1 and FALSE to 0 so you get a resulting array of either 1s (where both conditions are TRUE) or errors [#DIV/0!] where one or both are FALSE.
When you lookup 2 in that array it will never be found so it matches with the last 1, i.e. the match is with the last row where both conditions are satisfied...and the corresponding value from Sheet2!E$2:E$10 is returned. Another way is like this:
=INDEX(Sheet2!E$2:E$10,MATCH(1,(A2=Sheet2!A$2:A$10)*(C2=Sheet2!C$2:C$10),0))
which requires "array entry" with CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER

EXCEL match 2 columns against each other

I have two columns of data, they look something like this:
A B C D
1 2 SOME RECORD
2 6 SOME RECORD
3 10 SOME RECORD
4
5
6
7
8
9
10
So basically column A is a list of indices, where some of them appear in column C with corresponding records saved in column D. Column B is currently empty, and what I want to do is if say index 2 appears in both column A and column C (they matches), then put the record beside C2 in the cell B2. So essentially I want it to look like this:
A B C D
1 2 SOME RECORD
2 SOME RECORD 6 SOME RECORD
3 10 SOME RECORD
4
5
6 SOME RECORD
7
8
9
10 SOME RECORD
Can someone help please?!! Thanks!!!
UPDATE: I tried this and it doesn't work. The data in column D is calculated using a UDF and is refreshing every 1 second. The VLOOKUP function fails even though I can see the 2 indices are the same!! Is it because of the format of the cell or column? I.e. does vlookup compare data type as well?
Assuming your data in A starts from A1 - put in B1 the following and autofill:
=IFERROR(VLOOKUP($A1,$C:$D,2,0),"")
This includes handling of missing values.
You'll want this:
B1=VLOOKUP(A1, C:D, 2, FALSE)
This will look up the value in column A within the array spanning columns C and D. It will give you the value found in the second column (D). FALSE makes it an exact match, otherwise you might get 2 and 20 matching because hey, they're kind of similar...

Merge unique values if another cell matches

Merge all unique values if another cell matches. I already know how to merge cells but now some information is double. So what I would like to achieve is the following:
if column A has the same name, then all values given in column B for
that name must be given only ONCE in a new column.
My data has a row names and a row mode, for example (Row 1 is header)
A B
2 Brenda a
3 Brenda a
4 Joey a
5 Joey b
So I want:
E
2 a
3
4 a,b
5
I already did merge the modes in column 3:
=IF(A1<>A2;B2;C1&","&B2)
So I get in this example:
C
2 a
3 a,a
4 a
5 a,b
Then, I already did that only the first record get the additional modes in column 4:
=IF(A1=A2;"";INDEX(Sheet1!$C:$C;COUNTIF(Sheet1!$A:$A;$A2)+MATCH($A2;Sheet1!$A:$A;0) -1))
So I get in this example
D
2 a,a
3
4 a,b
5
Now I need a column that only uniques values are given for each name. So in this example:
E
2 a
3
4 a,b
5
If I am understanding how your data is structured, try this:
Add a new column, say column G for ease of explanation, that concatenates the name and mode in each row. So, cell G2="Brendaa", G3="Brendaa", G4="Joeya", G5="Joeyb", etc.
In your merge step you will test whether the current value in the cell for this column matches any previous values in the column: If no, you do the merge; if yes, you don't.
Your merge formula would change to something like the following:
=IF(A1<>A2,B2,IF(ISERROR(VLOOKUP(G2,G$1:G1,1,0)),C1&","&B2,""))
Then you would the next step as before.
