we are migrating TBs of files from onprem fileshare to azure file storage and use it as primary share. I understand Azure file sync can do this job we want to keep a local backup in a different server on prem. while file sync replicate changes back to onprem, but from what I understand, the frequency of sync happens every 24 hours from azure to onprem. Is it possible to increase that frequency? could we leverage databox for initial migration? Thanks
• Since Azure file share doesn’t have change notifications or journaling like there is on Windows Server, i.e., Windows USN journaling service which automatically detects any changes in the file share sync folder and automatically initiates a sync session with the Azure file share. Due to which, there is no way you can change the scheduled sync job cycle for Azure file sync. But, instead of changing the azure file sync scheduled sync cycle, you can use the following command to immediately sync the files that are changed in Azure file share: -

• Yes, you can leverage Azure DataBox in case you have more than 500TB of Data to be transferred to the cloud share and want to set it up and use it immediately or as early as possible on a whole. Also, ensure that the number of files to be synced to azure file share is less than 10 million as then indexing and their availability is a concern and is still in preview.

I have to choose the best tool to migrate data from on-premises to Azure.
Ideal solution would enable to sync the on-prem filesystem to an Azure storage account allowing for “differential sync” or (delta sync) for handling large files incremental updates.
Here are the Features and Benefits of using Azure File Sync:
Multiple File Servers at multiple locations. Sync all to single Azure File Storage. Commonly used files are cached on local server . If local server goes down, quickly install another Server or VM and sync Azure files to it.
The older , rarely accessed files will move to Azure thus freeing your local file Server .
Sync Group helps to manage locations that should be kept in sync with each other. Every Sync Group has one common Cloud Storage. So a Sync Group will have one Azure End point and multiple Server end points. There is a 2 way sync so that changes to Cloud are replicated on local server within 12 to 24 hours. But changes on a local server are replicated to all end points within 5 minutes.
An agent is installed on the Server end point . There is no need to change or relocate data on a different volume. Thus it is non-disruptive type of agent.
Every Server end point creates an Azure file share in the storage account. End user experience is unchanged.
When a particular local file is getting synced , then it is locked. But this is only for a few seconds.
A Disaster Recovery Solution for File Server. If local File Server is destroyed, set up a VM or physical server , join to the previous sync group and you get “rapid restore”.
When a file is renamed or moved, the meta data is preserved.
Its different from One Drive . One Drive is for Personal Document management and is not a general purpose File Server. One Drive is primarily meant for collaborating on Office files. Not optimized for very large files , CAD drawings, multimedia development projects.
Azure File Sync works with On Premise AD and not Azure AD.
I'm setting up a new Azure File Sync with a file server,
and there are some snapshots created by Azure File Sync every day.
I want to find a solution to change the snapshot creation time.
What do I need to set the command/Azure File Sync?
This is for a normal windows 2016 File Server, I registered the server endpoint "E:\"and the cloud endpoint "testsharefile1" into one sync group.
I had tried many times, sometimes there will be one snapshot created by Azure File Sync every day, and sometimes there will be two snapshots (almost same time) created by Azure File Sync.
I expect the Azure Files' snapshot can be created by Azure File Sync every day at the scheduled point time, but I don't know how to do it.
Azure File Sync used to create share snapshots daily to ensure files that are tiered can be accessed. These share snapshots are no longer needed by Azure File Sync so we stopped creating them when v7 released. To ensure you have a backup of the Azure file share, they should either manually create snapshots or use Azure Backup.
Note: Azure File Sync does still create a share snapshot when a new server is added to a sync group. Once the files have been downloaded to the new server, the temporary snapshot is deleted.
I understand Windows Azure Backup Agent performs incremental backups by tracking file and block level changes and only transferring the changed blocks, but my question is how does it track those changes?
The reason I ask is we are using Azure Backup as a off-site backup only, and are still planning on using our current Backup Appliance to backup locally.
I want to make sure that neither backups will conflict with the other, or mark that a file has been backed up on one system, and prevents the changes from being backed up on the second system.
Azure Backup agent leverages USN journal capability of file system to find the changed files. Ensure that latest Azure Backup agent is installed.
I have an old legacy application built on .NET remoting, and transferring data via XML via with FTP.
Esentially, a CRM system is sending XML files to a directory on the web server, which has a windows service that uses a filewatcher to process the incoming XML file, updating the database.
Similarly, changes on the web application serialize down into an XML file into an out folder, that the CRM polls via FTP every 5 minutes.
Trying to map the best services to convert this to for Azure.
You could use Azure Blobs or Azure Files for this.
Azure Blobs: This is the lowest cost option, while still providing high throughput. However, note that Azure Blobs do not have File Watcher functionality, so you would have to poll the directory every few minutes to check for a new file. If you delete files after processing them, then this is really easy - all you have to do is list and see if there are any files. If you want to retain the files, then you might have to do more, since the file list will get big over time. Let me know if this is the case and I can suggest some options.
Azure Files: This is an SMB share that you can mount from a VM in the same region. This will map pretty closely to your exising filesystem based code, including FileWatcher. However, note that Azure Files can only be mounted by a VM in the same region.
We have a worker role that's using local storage directory to save files uploaded by the customer and we'd need to have a backup of those files.
Given that we already planned to change the worker role to the storage services available on Azure, is there a temporary solution that we could use immediately to backup those files?
Is there an automated way (even with 3rd party services) to backup a local storage directory or even the entire C disk?
You can use AzCopy to bulk copy files from a local file system to an Azure blob container.
If you use the /XO option, that will only copy files newer than the last backup - in combination with the /Y option to suppress confirmation prompts, this is handy for running as a scheduled task to keep the blob backup current.
